ABSTRACT

Ergonomics is a young discipline, still in its early stages of development. Indeed, it is so young that its birthdate can be accurately pin-pointed: 12 July 1949. On this date, interested individuals congregated at the Admiralty in London with the aim of developing a new science of work (Murrell, 1980). The discipline which eventually emerged sought to amalgamate the knowledge and philosophies of such diverse subjects as psychology, biology, and engineering in order to understand better the ways in which humans interact with their surroundings, and thus how the surroundings can be engineered to suit the humans.
