ABSTRACT

Autopilot design studies for ship steering control based on the Proportional-IntegralDerivative (PID) and Pseudo Derivative Feedback (PDF) control algorithms have been carried out. The simulation results indicate that the autopilot based on the PDF algorithm has a greater ability to resist the effect of external load disturbances and has a better transient behaviour then that designed using the PID algorithm. The effect of incorporating time delay in the nonlinear equations is examined. The effect of non-linearities in the predicted ship behaviour is also studied in the simulations.
