ABSTRACT

The role of chemotherapy in head and neck squamous cell cancer (HNSCC) remains controversial despite many years of intensive investigation. This chapter focuses on chemotherapy for squamous cell cancers of the head and neck region, including tumours of the oral cavity, oropharynx, larynx and hypopharynx. Squamous cell cancers account for over 90% of tumours arising in this region. Other epithelial malignancies including adenocarcinomas and neuroendocrine cancers as well as non-epithelial lesions such as sarcomas, have distinct biological features and are beyond the scope of this discussion.
