ABSTRACT
Contemporary agriculture is characterized by a high degree of spe cialization or ‘drs-integration’ of crop and livestock production, both on individual farms and among regions. Grain and hay exported from spe cialized crop operations are utilized in confinement feeding operations which are ecologically disconnected with the crop operations, whether within the same region or thousands of kilometers away.
