In contrast to chromosomal conservation, chromosomal instability characterizes situations in which multiple closely related taxa (populations, subspecies, and/or species) belonging to a single phylogenetic lineage differ drastically from each other by major chromosomal rearrangements, sometimes resulting in high variability in chromosome number (Talavera et al., 2013).
