ABSTRACT

This chapter details the application of controlled environment agriculture (CEA) methods to urban populations, provides them with a fresh, safe, and sustainable food supply. As CEA becomes more accepted and eventually is insinuated into the very fabric of all cities worldwide, perhaps then some of the more pressing problems associated with urban sprawl will be greatly reduced by the creation of more employment opportunities, healthier food choices with the availability of year-round fresh produce, and thus less malnutrition among the poorest members of the global urban community. The reasons why vertical farming has been slow to develop include the lack of commercial manufacturers of hydroponic and aeroponic equipment designed specifically for tall buildings, efficient LED grow lights, and financial support for small-scale development of demonstration vertical farms. Municipalities must emulate the assemblages of diverse life forms in order to prevent further disruption of ecosystem services.
