ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on how to enhance soil awareness, particularly among city inhabitants. It chapter describes the causes of the alienation that city inhabitants experience with respect to the importance of soil to sustaining life. Awareness on the importance of healthy or clean soil for human well-being is much less developed than that of clean water or clean air. The attributes of clean water and air are universally known and accepted, readily perceivable, and easy to grasp by everyone. Scientific research is the motor of mind-oriented awareness about urban soil characteristics, distribution, functions, and processes. "Terramovil" is a mobile soil and geohazards education project sponsored by the Institute of Geology of the National University of Mexico (UNAM). Since 2013, geoscience bachelor students volunteer to provide nonformal education to increase awareness of the importance of soil and water conservation among children, young scholars, and the general public within the basin of Mexico City.
