ABSTRACT

A wide range of organisms are sexually transmitted infections (STI) and include gonococcus, Chlamydia, Treponema pallidum (syphilis), the protozoon Trichomonas vaginalis, hepatitis B (HBV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). With the male patient presenting to the sexually-transmitted diseases (STD) clinic with a first episode of gonococcal urethritis, the diagnosis and treatment may be straightforward. However, this person must have been infected during sexual intercourse, and could have infected others. Sexual partners need to be traced in order to identify and eliminate infections in them as well.
