ABSTRACT

Introduction Kent, Surrey and Sussex (KSS) Deanery started its senior GP registrar scheme in August 2001, initially as a pilot programme, to support the recruitment and retention of GP principals in their area. The scheme offers registrars who have completed summative assessment a further six months’ training at senior regis trar level. Senior GP registrars (SGPRs) are expected to spend 40% of their time exploring areas outside their training practice but within the wider terrain of the NHS. This may constitute further clinical experience within secondary care, perhaps with a view to later specialisation, or within public health or per haps attached to their local primary care organisations (PCOs).
