ABSTRACT

From 2 0 0 2 -2003 PCTs will be responsible for arranging annual appraisals for GPs in their area. To meet this requirement, a rolling national programme of appraiser training has been instigated with around 800 GP appraisers trained in the first wave. The appraisal process will involve a one-to-one meeting between appraiser and appraisee and and examination of the appraisee’s devel opmental needs structured around a PDP. In preparation for the appraisal, GPs will collate and review their educational activities for the year and formulate plans for future years. In addition to locally organised annual appraisal, there will be an external revalidation visit every five years. The details of the mechan ism of revalidation are still to be finalised but it is clear that the annual appraisal and PDP will form an essential part of this process.
