ABSTRACT

This review focuses on the clinical literature published in 2005 and 2006 on the treatment of bulimia nervosa (BN).

The most recent edition of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) Practice Guideline is little changed from the second edition (published in 2000). Its strengths include a comprehensive summary of the defining clinical features, epidemiology, etiology, course and treatment of the full range of eating disorders. The guideline provides up-to-date and practical information on the medical complications of eating disorders and their management. The summary and analysis of pharmacological therapy are comprehensive, current and incisive. However, despite the useful information that it provides for practitioners in many areas, the guideline is not without problems.
