ABSTRACT

A simple definition of integrated weed management (IWM) is ‘the use of more than one weed management tactic (biological, chemical, cultural, and/or physical)’ (Harker and O’Donovan 2013). A good introduction to IWM is provided by Liebman et al. (2007). Examples of the range of IWM techniques include

• Chemical, for example, use of herbicides • Cultural, for example, use of stale seed beds • Physical, for example, mechanical weeding

IWM is not about excluding one technique in favour of another, but developing an effective combination of techniques to ensure the sustainable control of weed populations.
