ABSTRACT

The herbicide-tolerant transgenic soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] is one of the earliest genetically modified (GM) commercial crops. Transgenic soybean retains its position as the GM crop cultivated on the largest scale globally, with food, nutritional, industrial and pharmaceutical uses. Between 1996 and 2015, about 1030 million hectares of GM soybean were grown, and an income of more than 50 billion US$ was brought to farmers by growing GM soybean. In 2015, about 92.1 million hectares of GM soybean were grown around the world in 11 countries, accounting for 51% of total GM crop hectarage and 83% of soybean grown globally (James, 2015).
