Potato is grown in more than 150 countries and is one of the most important food crops produced worldwide, with an overall production of 381 million of tonnes (MT) in 2014. Asia produced 187 MT (49%), Europe 125 MT (33%), the Americas 42 MT (11%), Africa 26 MT (7%) and Oceania 1.6 MT (0.4%), with Europe accounting for 55%, the majority, of seed potato production (FAOSTAT, 2014).
