ABSTRACT

Mango (Mangifera indica L.) originated in the Indo-Burma (Myanmar) region (Pandey and Dinesh, 2010). From its tropical centre of origin, the fruit gradually moved to subtropical countries and is now considered a pan-tropical fruit. Mango is grown in more than 100 countries of the world in different agroclimatic conditions and is commercially an important fruit crop for many countries in the tropics and subtropics. From ancient times this delicious fruit crop has achieved great cultural, socio-economic and religious significance in the Indian subcontinent. Mango is the national fruit of India, Pakistan and the Philippines and the mango tree is the national tree of Bangladesh. India has the richest collection of mango varieties.
