ABSTRACT
Marine research requires investment in ships and, for the science to develop, technological developments, the construction of new or more accurate instruments, and novel measurements to provide further insights into ocean processes. Ships have always been essential for marine studies (see Chapter 1), and will be for many decades into the future, but they are expensive so other methods of observing the ocean are evolving. The most striking of such methods to appear in the twentieth century is satellite remote sensing.
