ABSTRACT

THE BONES of the body (2.1-2.4) make up its internal supporting framework or skeleton, and can be classified as those of the axial skeleton (head, neck, and trunk) and those of the appendicular skeleton (limbs). Bones can also be classified according to their shapes, as long (the main limb bones), short (as in fingers and toes), flat (like the scapula or shoulderblade), irregular (as in the skull, vertebral column, hand, and foot), and sesamoid (found in some tendons; the largest is the patella or kneecap).
