ABSTRACT

Atheroma of the renal arteries can cause stenosis or occlusion of the vessels leading to hypertension or renal impairment. It is the commonest cause of renovascular disease. Atherosclerotic lesions of the renal artery typically occur in the ostium or proximal renal artery and are eccentric rather than concentric in nature. Lesions are commonly bilateral. The natural history is of progressive narrowing of the stenosis leading eventually to occlusion.
