ABSTRACT

OVERVIEW OF INFLAMMATION Inflammation is the response of living tissue to injury. Some form of inflammatory response is seen in virtually all living organisms but the higher life forms have the unique ability to use the vascular system to transport and deposit fluid and cells in the extravascular space. This is known as the inflammatory response. Inflamm - ation may be due to physical damage, chemical substances, microorganisms, or other agents. The inflammatory response consists of changes in blood flow, increased permeability of blood vessels, and escape of cells from the blood into the tissues. The changes are essentially the same whatever the cause and wherever the site.
