Obtaining an accurate history is essential and this requires careful questioning, as some of the information supplied can be quite subjective. It should begin with the signalment of the case. Age, sex, breed, and use of the horse can suggest certain particular conditions. For example, developmental orthopedic conditions are seen in young horses, tibial stress fractures are seen in young racing Thoroughbreds in training, and navicular syndrome is usually seen in adult horses used for general riding and sport horse activities. The length of ownership or training, as well as the type and amount of work the horse has been given, is useful basic information.
