ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to summarize the literature on the long-term effects of nightguard vital bleaching (NGVB) and discusses the longevity, post-treatment effects, and long-term results of NGVB using a 10% carbamide peroxide bleaching solution. The use of NGVB generally preceded what the literature was reporting, and patients were asking questions concerning efficacy, longevity, and safety. The results of the studies are consistent with overall long-term trends in levels of patient satisfaction, indicating that approximately one third of the patients who use NGVB will likely experience long-term satisfactory results. In evaluating the patients' perceptions of the NGVB procedure as reflected in their questionnaire responses, one can conclude that patient satisfaction correlates highly with how well the procedure worked. Clinical trials overwhelmingly support the efficacy and safety of NGVB with use of a 10% treatment solution. Early on, the literature did report NGVB as being effective in lightening extrinsically stained or discolored teeth, in many cases up to 98% lighter.
