ABSTRACT
Durkheim put forward the proposition that society was held together by social solidarity. Law had a central role to play in the transition from a simple system in which law was repressive (mechanical solidarity) to a more complex system based on the division of labour and secularism, where law is restitutive (organic solidarity).
