ABSTRACT
Some might question this division, for there were, within these broad divisions, important developments which might have been chosen as the landmarks. It might be argued forcefully that so much has happened since the end of the Second World War that this half-century should not be considered as a single period. Be that as it may, these three periods will be adopted here for the purposes of a very brief outline of what lies behind the law as generally understood today.
