ABSTRACT
In the classical criminology of Beccaria, Bentham and Austin we give up power to a strong sovereign to rule over society. The father figure for this is the intellectual work of Thomas Hobbes. Hobbes understood the problem as one of building over the void of a world in perpetual flux. Order must be created to ‘restrain what was natural.’ The issue was how to frame a template so that the commands would become accepted by the populace.
