Susan Scott-Hunt Secrecy about the ownership of property is an abiding theme within equity. Whether defined by constituent 'things' or the ability to act autonomously or command the compliance of others, property is a form of power, and, as such, is a 'crucial indicator of the balance of power between women and men'! From women's perspective, the theme of secrecy about property has particular resonance, because of the social and historical necessity for women to hide (or have hidden) their power over property and the way men have used secrecy about power over property to control women's choices.
