ABSTRACT

Council Directives 89/369/EEC and 89/429/EEC regulate air emissions from new and existing municipal waste incineration plants. These two Directives came into force in December 1990. Directive 94/67 on the Incineration of Hazardous Waste was passed into law in December 1994. This Directive has as its goal the minimisation of emissions resulting from the incineration of hazardous waste that might be detrimental to human health and the environment. The Directive sets stringent licensing, technical, design and operational criteria for all hazardous waste plants and facilities. Existing facilities will be required to upgrade to meet the new standards.
