ABSTRACT

The law affecting the rights of children includes: the Children Act 1989 (the ‘Children Act’); the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (in force in the UK on 15 January 1992); the Human Rights Act 1998 (in force in the UK from 2 October 2000); and the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (ECHR) and its Protocols. Other legislation affords specific rights to children and families, for example Mental Health and is cited below where relevant.
