Parties agreeing extra time for compliance

It was very common under the old rules for parties to agree to provide extra time to each other for compliance with the rules. So, for instance, it was very common for the parties to grant each other extra time to file pleadings (statements of case). Such agreements were common because, if a party did not agree, the court would, in most cases, grant extra time for doing the act in any event (unless the delay was inordinate and inexcusable, had caused prejudice to the other party and the limitation period for the cause of action had expired).
