The office of chief constable The ‘man in charge’ (today it is sometimes the ‘woman in charge’) of the formative police forces had a variety of titles in the 19th century such as captain of the watch, superintending constable, head constable and from about the 1880s onwards the title of chief constable which became universal in 1919.
