ABSTRACT

The picture concerning victim/offender mediation has changed the least over the past 10 years. Some of the services in existence have ceased, due to financial cutbacks, and a few others have started. Three out of the four services originally funded by the Home Office in 1985-87 have gone from strength to strength. Three large county areas have supported victim/offender mediation in a big way, mostly funded by the probation service. There has been great interest, but the total number of services has remained static until recently, because of general cutbacks and because recent government criminal justice policy has emphasised punishment rather than rehabilitation.
