ABSTRACT

Whereas in the previous chapter it was argued that certain existing sanctions should be discarded, in this chapter it is contended that there are several new types of sanction that ought to be employed. In meting out punishment, freedom and material wealth are the primary interests targeted by the criminal justice system of most Western countries. There is good reason for this: most people covet these interests and hence, one can be relatively sure that such deprivations will work – they will hurt.
