ABSTRACT

It is remarkable how little has been written on the effect of gender on the character and composition of the voluntary sector.1 In attempting to remedy this, this chapter will argue that, while the nature of the voluntary sector has traditionally been female gendered, it is undergoing a period of change, brought about through the formalisation of the sector itself.
