ABSTRACT

Due to the wear and tear imposed upon discs, there may be a weakening of the fibrous or ligamentous portion resulting in the nucleus pulposus bulging or prolapsing (Figure 26). If the protrusion occurs into the spinal canal, it can result in the disc impinging upon one of the nerves emerging from the spinal cord (lateral disc prolapse) or even on the cord itself (a central disc prolapse).
