ABSTRACT
Within this bony cage lie the two lungs together with the heart and great vessels, which are the major arteries and veins bringing blood to, and taking it away from, the heart. The heart sits within a space directly beneath the sternum pointing to the left. This space is known as the pericardial cavity as it is lined by a membrane known as the pericardium, cf the peritoneum.
