ABSTRACT
A hoarse voice is a common complaint. The majority of cases have innocent causes, but a proportion are caused by malignant tumours of the larynx or surrounding structures, and the symptom of hoarseness must therefore be taken extremely seriously. Although subsidiary in importance to maintenance and protection of the airway, the production of voice is an extremely important function of the larynx, because of the central role of verbal communication in society.
