The specialist area of medical and surgical practice to which this book relates has a confusing variety of names. Traditionally, in the UK, it has been termed ‘ear, nose and throat surgery’, abbreviated to ‘ENT’. In the US it has been referred to as ‘otolaryngology’ or ‘otorhinolaryngology’. The former term denotes the study of diseases of the ear and throat, and the latter of the ear, nose and throat. The terms are used interchangeably. The specific sub-specialist areas within the field have shorter names: ‘otology’ to denote diseases of the ear, ‘rhinology’ to denote diseases of the nose, and ‘laryngology’ to denote those of the throat.
