Few legal issues are likely to arise in the treatment of Menière’s disease. Failure to diagnose an acoustic neuroma masquerading as Menière’s disease is unacceptable bearing in mind the current availability of non-invasive imaging techniques. Criticism of the selection of a particular operation for Menière’s disease would be difficult since there are differing views amongst otologists of experience and distinction, but there are obvious issues of informed consent surrounding both labyrinthectomy and vestibular neurectomy.
