ABSTRACT
The central government is represented in each autonomous region by the Minister of the Republic. This post is filled by a presidential appointee proposed by the national government. Once appointed, the minister has powers not dissimilar to those of the modern French regional Prefect or the Italian regional commissioner. There is also a degree of similarity with the roles of the UK Secretaries of State for Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland (Art 232, Portuguese Constitution).
