The most important single elements in the development of extremism in the party of Parliament were the growing radicalism of Parliament’s army from 1647 onwards and of one of its leading figures, Oliver Cromwell, and the king’s own actions, which finally led a majority in a Parliament purged of moderates by the army and reduced to an extremist ‘rump’ to conclude that no settlement with him was possible and that the monarchy itself must be destroyed.
