ABSTRACT

The Animal Remedies Act 1993 repealed previous legislation and extended the provisions relating to veterinary medicines. The Animal Remedies Regulations 1996 (SI 1996/179) as amended by the Control of Animal Remedies and their Residues Regulations 1998 (SI 1998/507) consolidated veterinary legislation. The 1996 Regulations laid down provisions regarding the authorisation of animal remedies, the manufacture, import and export of animal remedies, the sale and supply of animal remedies, the administration of animal remedies and provisions relating to animals and animal produce and veterinary medicine and surgery. Regulation 41 of the 1996 Regulations sets out provisions regarding clinical trials on animals. The Minister for Agriculture and Food is the licensing authority for immunological veterinary medicines pursuant to the provisions of the 1996 Regulations. The IMB evaluates and advises the Minister on applications for product licences.
