ABSTRACT

Punishment of offenders in the UK takes place by detention in secure facilities and through structured supervision in community settings. Whereas imprisonment is perhaps intuitively associated with ‘punishment’, this is not always the public perception of community based sentences. Indeed, as discussed earlier in this book, public attitudes towards punishment and criminal justice sanctions have posed problems for many governments. For the purposes of this chapter, the term punishment is taken to refer to the environments of prisons and to probation services delivered in the community. Thus, the ‘punishment’ element of prison and probation work is about the containment of prisoners in prison and the management of offenders in community settings.
