One police officer to another, speaking of a police informer afforded a huge witness protection programme: ‘What did he tell us? As far as I know, nothing. I think we let him disappear into oblivion all too easy. We could have threatened him with the possibility of being thrown back to the wolves — then he would have talked to us, that is for sure!’
