The changing face of probation in prisons

ByBrian Williams

By focusing on a few significant historical and contemporary examples, this chapter puts prison probation work into context. It does so in order to demonstrate the influences which moulded the task of prison probation officers, including in the early days the influence of the Church of England, then the probation service’s adherence to social and case work, and more recently the impact of managerialism and of public service ‘modernisation’.
