The Marine Leap: Conservation Banking and the Brave New World: Tundi Agardy
The considerable strides taken towards developing conservation banking (described in previous chapters) have clearly paved the way for private sector investment in the conservation of natural ecosystems. It is difficult to imagine what this brave new world of private sector conservation will look like in 10, 20 or 100 years, but it probably will have dramatic impacts not only on our surroundings on land, but also on the marine environment. What follows is an exploration of some of the most promising new tools for promoting marine conservation that this brave new world will bring forth. Many of these tools are still in the pilot – or even theoretical – stages of their development; they are outlined here in the hope that they will help us peer a bit deeper into the future of market-based strategies for protecting the oceans upon which we all depend.
