Outcomes from the World Summit for Sustainable
The Johannesburg Plan of Implementation (JPOI) is the key document agreed at the Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD). The final agreement was seen by many as flawed, lacking somewhat in terms of structure and coherent objectives. However, the agreement did manage to produce more than was expected, taking into account the political climate under which it was negotiated in 2002. Within the JPOI’s 11 chapters there are a number of clear time-bound targets and softer commitments for undertaking action in support of sustainable development. Chapter XI on ‘Institutional frameworks for sustainable development’ deals exclusively with issues of governance. The chapter presents a set of commitments that support enhancing governance systems for sustainable development at all levels.
