Labour, Information and Agricultural Technology

ByRobert Tripp

Low external-input technology (LEIT) is often described as both labour-and information-intensive. As the review of these technologies in Chapter 2 has shown, such characterizations do not necessarily represent the exceptionally diverse nature of LEIT, the information and labour requirements of which vary according to technology, farming system and farmer experience. Nevertheless, it is broadly accurate to view LEIT as an attempt to lower dependence upon external inputs by placing greater reliance upon the utilization of locally available resources, and this usually has some implications for the deployment of labour and the management of information.
