South East England: Global Constellation

ByKathy Pain, Peter Hall, Gareth Potts, David Walker

South East England is unique among the eight mega-city regions (MCRs). It is by far the largest POLYNET region, extending even beyond the area mapped in Chapter 2: west into the South West and north into the southern parts of the East and West Midlands regions. Most significantly, the quantitative analyses of commuting (Chapter 2) and advanced producer service (APS) networks (Chapter 3) have revealed important functionally polycentric relationships covering a wide arc in the west of the region, paradoxically stemming from the strength of London’s global linkages.1
