ABSTRACT
This book has explored in some depth a range of hydrogen futures which might be regarded as including a ‘hydrogen economy’, defined as a (national) economic system in which hydrogen is the energy carrier that delivers ‘a substantial fraction of the nation's energy-based goods and services’ (NRC and NAE: p11). It has discussed the range of technologies of hydrogen production, distribution, storage and end-use, which these futures could involve, as well as the economics of these technologies, and modelled the role hydrogen could play in the energy system of a country like the UK if the technologies developed sufficiently to become competitive with current technology incumbents.
