ABSTRACT

The end of the dictatorial regime in the 1970s was followed by socialist party dominance and the consolidation of democracies (Gunther et al, 1995). Students of Greek political culture have pointed to patron–client relationships in political exchanges, a powerless publich sphere, and the intense political struggles for the sake of the party (eg Demertzis, 1990, p74). During the past decade, however, the importance of these traits has decreased. Trends towards a more prevalent civil society, especially as regards the environment, are evident (eg Kousis, 1999). Simultaneously, a break from traditional views and practices, as well as signs of a political crisis have also been documented for the same period (eg Dodos et al, 1990).
