ABSTRACT

The transition to sustainability will not come about through a sustainability driver. If it progresses at all, it will do so because of a changing society and political economy. This will be shaped by the intermixing of the global and local (the centrepiece of this study), the unpredictable implications of the Internet and virtual reality, and reaction to the growing insecurities of the modern economic world. We may have to seek refuge in a more ‘social security’ through the bonding and connecting that informal economies and local networks create to hold us together.
